The Calçada da Glória is a street in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It leads over a length of 265 meters from the Praça dos Restauradores in the Baixa steeply up to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in the Bairro Alto . The slope is 17 degrees.
The street name is already documented from the time before the earthquake of 1755 . It is derived from the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Glória founded in 1574 by Fernão Pais in the adjacent Rua da Glória . Irish monks settled here around 1626.
To cope with the steep incline, the engineer Raoul Mesnier built the Ascensor da Glória , which went into operation on October 24, 1885.
The street is the scene of the Subida à Glória cycling race .
