The Caledonia Road Church , formerly also Caledonia Road United Presbyterian Church and Hutchesontown And Caledonia Road Church , is a ruined church in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Scottish architect John Baird was responsible for the design . At that time he ran a joint architecture office with Alexander Thomson . After the partnership broke up in 1856, Thomson continued the construction that had begun the previous year. The church was opened on March 22, 1857. The total cost was about £ 8,000.

In 1963, the ecclesiastical use of the Caledonian Road Church ended and the city of Glasgow took over the building. In October 1965 the church burned down after arson and was partially demolished as a result. Various plans for the restoration and continued use of the building have existed since the 1990s, but these were not implemented. Only the work necessary to stabilize the building was carried out. The endangerment of the ruin is classified as high.

description

The building, designed in the classical Greek Revival , stands at the junction of Gorbals Road ( A730 ) and Caledonian Road ( A728 ). The V-shaped converging streets close the church on both sides. A portico in the style of Greek temple architecture with six Ionic columns emerges on the front facing south-east at gallery level . He sits on the massive church hall. The two entrance portals are let in there. They are richly ornamented with Greek motifs and antefixes . The building is nine axes on the west side and three axes on the east side. Only a short element of the gallery remains. The square tower on the west facade is designed with open, narrow triplet windows on all sides near its end . It closes with a lantern with a cross.
