Calinaga buddha is a butterfly ( butterflies )found in Asiafromthe noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 95 to 102 millimeters. The upper sides of the wings show a black-gray basic color in both sexes. There is a whitish mark of spots between the clearly protruding black veins. The apex is strongly rounded. The area of ​​the anal angle on the upper side of the hind wing is sometimes yellowish in color. On the yellow-brown undersides of the wings, the whitish markings on the upper sides are somewhat paler. The orange-red to cinnamon-red haired prothorax is striking .

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are colored green and have many small whitish dots and short hairs on the body surface. Two whitish hairy black horns on the red colored head are particularly striking.

Doll

The doll has a grass green color and a balloon-like shape. It is designed as a falling doll and is attached to branches.

Similar species

Calinaga davidis is distinguished by its overall pale, smoke-gray appearance.

Occurrence, subspecies and habitat

The range of the species extends from east India , to Burma and in the southeast of China . It is also found in Taiwan . There are currently six subspecies in the individual occurrence areas . Calinaga buddha inhabits forest areas at altitudes between 1000 and 2000 meters.

Way of life

The moths can be found in spring. They like to suck liquids from the damp ground. Occasionally they also visit flowers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the white mulberry ( Morus alba ) as well as Morus australis and Morus acidosa . They hide during the feeding breaks by cutting and folding the side of a leaf, creating a tubular shelter, which in the adult caterpillars is also spun with silk threads.
