Caliscelis bonellii is a cicada from the family of roller-hoppers (Caliscelidae).

features

The cicadas reach lengths of about 5 mm. The cicada species has a pronounced sexual dimorphism .

The males have a black basic color. Pronotum and shield as well as the forewings are colored light yellow. The outer edge of the wing, colored white, is lined with a dark band. The wings do not cover the entire abdomen. The front abdomen is blue on the lower sides. A white transverse band runs across the abdomen. The end of the abdomen is black. The front legs are black. The anterior femora and tibia are widened in the shape of a scoop. The middle and rear legs are reddish in color.

The females have a light brown base color. Dark brown ribbons run lengthways across her body. The females also have widened front legs. The legs are light brown to reddish in color.

distribution

The cicada species is common in the European Mediterranean area. The occurrence ranges from Spain to Greece and also includes the islands of Corsica , Sardinia and Sicily . The species has established itself as a neozoon in the US states of California and Oregon . The first find in North America dates from 1965 and comes from California.

Way of life

The cicada species prefers dry open-land biotopes such as steppes or ruderal areas. Observing the imagines from late June to September. They move nimbly on the ground in the herb layer. The species forms one generation per year and hibernates as an egg. The dog tooth grass ( Cynodon dactylon ) is named as a host plant of the species .
