Caluco is a municipality in El Salvador in the Sonsonate department . It is in the center of the department.

Surname

There are various attempts to interpret the place name Calhuco, which comes from the Nawat : One explanation is "place of the hostel" from Nahuatl calcuai (tl) ("roof") and the locative ending "co", another "place of the crows" from cacalo (tl) ("Krähe") and the locative ending.

history

The old Caluco was founded by the Pipil . Around 1200 the area came under the rule of Cuzcatlan . The former rule of Cuzcatlan was finally conquered by the Spanish in 1528. Caluco now belonged to the Alcaldía Mayor de Sonsonate . The main crop was cocoa . Dominicans built a St. Peter's Church in Caluco , which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1773. In 1824 Caluco came to the Department of Sonsonate . Around 1890 it had 790 inhabitants.

The sights of Calucos include the ruins of the colonial St. Peter's Church and a warm spring (Balneario de Agua Caliente) . Every year the feast of St. Peter is celebrated from June 27th to 30th.

Caluco is one of the few places where there are still some speakers of the Pipil language, Nawat , which was brought to the brink of extinction as a result of the harsh repression since the Genocide on the Pipil in 1932. But it can hardly be heard in everyday life because it is only spoken by a few old people.
