features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 18 to 24 millimeters. This makes them one of the smaller owl butterflies. The basic color of the forewings shows light pink tones, whereby the edge area stands out a little darker. A large, conspicuous, wine-red to red-brown, semi-elliptical spot extends from the middle of the rear edge to about the middle of the wing. The scientific name of the species is derived from this feature from the Latin communis  = "common" and macula  = "spot", since the two inner edge spots combine to form a common pattern when sitting. The rear wings without drawing are whitish and provided with a slight pink shimmer. The fringes are very long and largely correspond in color to the respective wings.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are short and black-brown in color. Their reddish belly legs are rudimentary. The very small head is black-brown, the stigmas red.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is only very locally distributed in Central and Southern Europe and is usually rare. It also occurs from Turkey to Transcaucasia and the Middle East . Calymma communimacula is found in warm, dry places.

Way of life

The main flight time of the diurnal and nocturnal moths are the months of July and August. At night they also visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live on fruit trees, but do not eat parts of the plant, but instead feed on an entomophagus . So they suck out scale insects (Coccoidea) and make a protective housing from their empty shells. They pupate in a web on the tree trunk.
