The Calyptraeidae are a family almost exclusively of marine snails , which, with a few exceptions, live on hard floors. They filter their food out of the water with the help of the gills or mucous webs.
features
The casings are almost entirely cup-shaped with a large flat mouth. Only a few shapes have a flat to highly conical housing. The adult size ranges from about 13 mm to about 7 cm. Characteristic is a large suction cup to hold on to the ground. An operculum is therefore not available, but can be applied briefly in the larval phase. The animals are hermaphrodites, and some species also change sex during their lifetime. They are first males and later in life they become females (protandric). The ontogenetic development takes place via Veliger larvae.
Way of life
The representatives of the family Calyptraeidae can be found in almost all seas, with the exception of the north and south polar regions. The vertical occurrence in the water column extends from the tidal area to the deeper shelf areas. They live on hard substrates (hard floors or hard parts, e.g. mussel shells), as they filter plankton out of the water with the help of the gills or produce slime webs in which plankton becomes entangled. Then the net and its contents are eaten.
Systematics
The family Calyptraeidae is not (yet) further subdivided into subfamilies:
- Calyptraeidae Lamarck, 1809
- Bicatillus Swainson, 1840
- Calyptraea Lamarck, 1799
- Clypeola Gray , 1867
- Crepipatella Lesson, 1830
-
Slippers ( Crepidula Lamarck, 1799)
- American slippery slipper ( Crepidula fornicata Linnaeus, 1758)
- Crucibulum Schumacher, 1817
- Grandicrepidula McLean, 1995
- Sandalium Schumacher, 1817?
- Sigapatella Lesson , 1830
- Siphopatella Lesson, 1830
- Trochita Schumacher, 1817
- Turbocalyptraea Eames, 1957
- Verticumbo SS Berry, 1940
The extent of the family is very uncertain, as some authors consider some genres only as sub-genres or as synonyms.
