Camara dam

The Camara Dam ( Bras. Barragem Camará ) about five kilometers north of Alagoa Nova in the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil broke on June 17, 2004. There were three, five or seven dead and major property damage.

The dam is located on the Rio Riachão , a tributary of the Rio Mamanguate , about 1,300 miles (2080 km) northeast of São Paulo . The building was only completed in 2002 according to the state of the art and had cost 6.5 million US dollars (20 million reais ). The barrier structure is a 50 m high dam that was built using the RCC construction method ( rolled concrete ).
Effects of the dam breach
The rupture after the first heavy rains the facility experienced released 17 million cubic meters of water. A construction error is assumed to be the cause . The tidal wave destroyed 250 houses in Alagoa Grande, some 20 km below, and left 800 families with more than 3,000 people homeless. 300 families were housed in public buildings such as schools. Several hundred stores lost goods or facilities. The number of dead is given differently as 3, 5 or 7.
Also, the place was Mulungu damaged where there was more destruction. The state government put the damage at 9.8 million US dollars (30 million reais).
In 2009, the state government decided to rebuild the dam.
