Camellia polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Camelia Polka is a quick polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 248). The work was performed for the first time on January 29, 1861 in the Dianabad Hall in Vienna .

Remarks

The work was created in Mardi Gras in 1861. The Strauss publisher Carl Haslinger organized a ball in the Dianabad Hall out of gratitude for a medal awarded to him by the Emperor, to which Johann Strauss and his brother Josef contributed the music. As a special incentive in the evening, every lady present should be given a camellia . But that could not be achieved in the middle of the severe winter. Instead, Johann Strauss contributed the Camellien Polka to the ball, almost as a replacement. The music was well received and was used several times for Strauss arrangements in the 20th century.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 2 minutes and 59 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
