Caudle , Carousel or Cameo is a medium-sized apple variety from the USA, with an elongated shape. The fruit peel is yellowish-red to deep red and lightly striped, the flesh is medium-firm and juicy and has a slightly sweet taste. The apple is characterized by a good shelf life.

The variety goes back to a spontaneous hybrid found in 1987 in the US state of Washington in the grower of the namesake Darrel Caudle, probably from Red Delicious and Golden Delicious .

Caudle is grown and sold worldwide as a club variety under the brand name Cameo . The variety is not available to direct marketers .

Cultivation

Caudle is one of the most productive varieties under the climatic conditions in northern Germany , but it is particularly sensitive to late frost. In Saxony, during an evaluation of several apple varieties for table fruit cultivation, it was found that caudle shows a pronounced alternation and has a "poor" taste after prolonged storage.

In Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain and France, caudle was grown on 420 hectares in 2008 , almost 8,000 tons of apples were harvested. Five years earlier it was only 2,800 tons.

marketing

The variety was initially marketed by the American company Dole Fruits . Since 2001 it has been offered on the European market under the brand name Cameo . The European brand Cameo is owned by the French tree nursery Dalival , marketing in Europe is carried out by Cameo Europe SAS.

Mutations

In recent years, mutants of the Caudle variety have been patented or placed under plant variety protection. The following table contains examples:

variety Brand name patent Description, comparisons refer to Caudle
Cauflight Cameo US2009144865 more and more intense red color, higher proportion of well-colored apples, also inside the treetop, discovered in 2000 at Flightshott Farm, Kent, UK
Dudek US19766 (P2) stronger red color, discovered in East Wenatchee, Washington, USA in September 1998
