Camp Nichols (also Fort Nichols ) is a former fortress in the US state of Oklahoma . It's located about three miles northwest of Wheeless in Cimarron County .

The camp was built in 1865 by volunteers from New Mexico and California under the command of Kit Carson to travelers on the Cimarron route of the Santa Fe Trail from attacks of living in the area Comanche and Kiowa protect -Indianer. It was given up again in the following year. Today only ruins of the camp remain.

The remains of Camp Nichols were granted National Historic Landmark status in May 1963 . In October 1966, they were listed as a site on the National Register of Historic Places .
