Campbeltown Library and Museum (German: Campbeltownbücherei and museum ) is a museum and former library in the Scottish town of Campbeltown . It is located in the city center at the intersection of St John Street and Hall Street . In 1984 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The building was donated by James MacAlister Hall from Campbeltown. He returned to his place of birth after a long career in India. As an architect, he hired John James Burnet, one of the most successful Scottish architects of the time, who presented a design in the Scottish Victorian style. The building was built in 1897 and 1898 using only high quality materials. The library was later moved out of the building and the vacant space was used as the administrative offices of the city of Campbeltown. The courtyard garden was redesigned in the 21st century and dedicated to Linda McCartney . A sculpture showing the photographer and musician was placed there.

exhibition

The exhibition includes exhibits from various thematic areas, including archeology, natural history, social and industrial cultural history. In addition to depicting the influence of fishing on the town of Campbeltown, local and regional finds from the Stone, Bronze and Viking Ages are also on display. In addition, an important collection of the nationally known painters William McTaggart , Campbell Mitchell and Archibald MacKinnon is shown. Visiting the exhibition is free.
