The Campe'sche Historische Kunststiftung is a foundation established by Julius HW Campe in his will in 1909, whose investment income benefits the two most important Hamburg art museums.

History and meaning

Julius Heinrich Wilhelm Campe (February 18, 1846 - November 12, 1909), son of the Heine publisher Julius Johann Wilhelm Campe , was the director of the Hoffmann und Campe publishing house . He left part of his assets to a foundation appointed by him in his will with the purpose of using the proceeds of the capital to supply the Hamburg collections with objects from the arts or the applied arts of earlier times. In 1915 the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg granted the Campe'schen Historischen Kunststiftung legal capacity. Assets came to the foundation for the first time in 1930 (after the death of previous heirs), which has consisted of two commercial properties in downtown Hamburg since 1955. Half of the surplus from property management goes to the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg for the purchase of works of art. The total amount of the donations made from 1930 to 2008 amounts to the equivalent of 14.6 million euros. The foundation is managed by a board of directors, which includes the directors of the two Hamburg art museums and a senior official from the Hamburg authority responsible for culture, as well as a managing director.
