This article covers the Chilean national soccer team at the Campeonato Sudamericano 1916 , the first South American championship to be held in Argentina. Qualification was not necessary for the tournament in which the four founding members of CONMEBOL participated.
Chile had no chance in the fight for the South American Championship. Nevertheless, they were able to hold a draw against Uruguay until the 44th minute, but then conceded their first goal shortly before the break. Ten minutes after the restart followed the 0: 2 and in the further course of the game two more goals against a clear defeat. In their second game, the Chileans were already two minutes behind against hosts Argentina, but were able to equalize in the 44th minute with their very first goal. Telésforo Báez scored the goal. After the break, the Argentinians scored a real scoring, which was initiated to the disadvantage of the Chileans with two penalties. In the 60th and 62nd minute, Juan Domingo Brown met from the penalty spot. In addition, there were three more goals against the hosts, which concluded the second defeat for Chile. In the last game against Brazil, Chile had no chance of winning the title of South American champions. Although Brazil only played their third international match, while Chile had already played seven since 1910, the Chileans fell behind this time too. However, with six minutes to go, Hernando Salazar was able to equalize and put Chile in last place with at least one point.
