The Trout River ( English for " trout river") is a left tributary of the Mackenzie River in the Canadian Northwest Territories .
The Trout River forms the drain of Trout Lake . It leaves this on the north bank and flows in a northeastern direction. It occasionally has rapids and takes water from several streams and lakes. The river begins to meander before being crossed by Highway 1 ( Mackenzie Highway ). The Trout River is now making a sharp change in direction to the north. It flows through a 60 m deep gorge for the last 20 kilometers, before flowing 50 km upstream from Jean Marie River into the Mackenzie River. In the east, the catchment area of the Trout River borders that of the Redknife River , in the west of that of the Jean Marie River .
The river is namesake of the Trout River Formation , a stratigraphic unit of the Western Canadian sedimentary basin .
