The Sosto is a 2221  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Blenio valley in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . It towers above the village of Olivone , which is around 900 meters at the southwestern foot of the mountain, and the village of Campo ( 1215  m above sea level ) in the northwest.

construction

The Sosto, a prominent and isolated rock pyramid, is also called the Matterhorn of the Blenio Valley . It got this nickname because of its distinctive shape with the steeply sloping west and south slopes. The north and east sides of the side valleys Val Luzzone and Val Carasino are less steep.

At the foot of the west face , the Brenno has created the narrow Gola del Sosto gorge between Sosto and the Töira mountain range ( Pizzo Rossetto , 2099  m above sea level ). The old road Vecchia Strada del Sosto to Campo, which leads through the gorge, has been replaced by a tunnel.

The sosto consists of gneiss . Parts of the mountain, so the summit region, are made of slate . The blue-gray limestone mica schist with silica lime and marble layers even gives its name to a sub-unit (4th order) in the geology of the Alps. The Sosto slate belongs to the Bündner slate .

Access

A material cable car leads from Olivone to Alp Compietto on the southern slope ( 1570  m above sea level ). From there, a path leads north along the eastern flank of the mountain to the Lago di Luzzone reservoir ( 1609  m above sea level ). It crosses the Muazz pass ( 1697  m above sea level ), which can also be reached by car from Lago di Luzzone.

The easiest ascent is from Pass Muazz , where an unmarked path climbs steeply to the northeastern upstream side summit ( 2102  m above sea level ). In the last stretch to the summit there is rock to be crossed. The level of difficulty is given as T4 to T5.
