Derek Robert Whitmore (born December 17, 1984 in Rochester , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with the Straubing Tigers .

Career

After holding various positions in junior leagues, Whitmore joined the university team at Bowling Green State University , where he played four seasons in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In March 2008, the American signed his first professional contract with the Buffalo Sabers . There the striker was mainly used in the American Hockey League , with the Portland Pirates and in his hometown with the Rochester Americans . On December 20, 2011 Whitmore made his debut in the National Hockey League in a game of the Buffalo Sabers against the Ottawa Senators . The American played a total of two NHL games.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , the striker signed a try-out contract with St. John's IceCaps , the farm team of the Winnipeg Jets . There, however, he only came to seven missions in six weeks. As a result, his contract was terminated. For the rest of the season Whitmore signed a contract with the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League . Five days after his last game for the IceCaps, the striker made his debut for the Panthers and prepared two goals in the away game against the Straubing Tigers . Whitmore also convinced in the remaining games of the season, so that his contract was extended until 2014. In July 2013, however, the striker made use of a contractually agreed release clause for a commitment in North America and joined the Hershey Bears from the AHL. From March 2014 to the end of the season, the left-handed shooter was finally loaned to the Adirondack Phantoms within the league .

In the summer of 2014, Whitmore decided to work in Europe again and switched again to the DEL, where he played for the Iserlohn Roosters in the 2014/15 season and made it to the quarter-finals of the playoffs with 16 goals and five assists, but where they contributed failed at the later vice world champion ERC Ingolstadt . In the 2015/16 season , the American was on the ice for the Vienna Capitals in the EBEL , but returned to the DEL after a year when he signed a one-year contract with the Straubing Tigers .
