The CSA (Center Social Autogestionat, German: self-administered social center) Can Vies has been occupied since 1997 in Barcelona .

history

The house in the Sants district, built in 1879 , was occupied by young people in 1997 and operated as a social and cultural center. The owners are the transport companies in Barcelona (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona).

Eviction and reactions

After negotiations between the occupiers and the city failed, the building was cleared by the police on May 26, 2014 and demolition work began. Serious riots broke out in Barcelona on the following nights. Protests and clashes between demonstrators and police took place in other cities in Catalonia as well as in Valencia and Mallorca in the following days . In response to the clashes in the Catalan metropolis, the Interior Ministry in Madrid sent 200 police officers to reinforce the situation in Barcelona.

As part of the protests in Barcelona, barricades were erected and the demolition excavator set on fire on the site of the former social center. After the city announced that it would stop the demolition work, sympathizers and neighbors of the social center began to rebuild the building, unhindered by the police, on May 31, 2014.

The Spanish urban sociologist Manuel Castells said in response to the eviction that he wanted to withdraw the vote he had given to Mayor Xavier Trias in the local elections .
