Canaan is a small, rural town in the southwest of Tobago, which belongs to Trinidad and Tobago, in the Western Tobago region .

location

Canaan is about two kilometers east of Crown Point and close to the ANR Robinson International Airport . The nearest ferry port is the island capital Scarborough, 8 km to the east .

Economy and Transport

The most important branch of the economy is tourism in the form of holiday homes and apartments. Gastronomy, retail and small businesses have settled along Milford Road, an extension of the Claude Noel Highway coming from Scarborough towards the airport. There are several historical sugar mills in town and in the immediate vicinity, most of which have been converted into hotels or restaurants. The residential area south of Milford Road is affected by airport expansion work; Landowners and illegal settlers were expropriated in advance of the expansion work that began in November 2019.

Facilities

The place has an infirmary with the Canaan Health Center. Despite the small population, Canaan has four Christian churches. The site shares the green area Canaan / Bon Accord Recreation Ground with the neighboring Bon Accord , which among other things serves as the venue for the games of the common cricket team of the two sites.
