The Canacidae are a family of the two-winged (Diptera) and belong to the flies (Brachycera). About 100 species of this group are known worldwide, in Central Europe only the species Xanthocanace ranula can be found.

The representatives of Xanthocanace ranula are about 2.5 millimeters long and live on the seashore. The larvae of the flies graze on the algae growth here, while the adults fly over salt water pools. With their specially equipped proboscis, they fish microorganisms from the surface of the water with a fish trap .
