Canada Eastern Railway

The Canada Eastern Railway (CE) was a railway company in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . It was first founded in 1870 as the Northern and Western Railway and built a railway line from South Devon on the Saint John River opposite the provincial capital Fredericton in a northeast direction to the Intercolonial Railway . The connection with this railway was made in Nelson . The line went into operation in 1887 after three years of construction and ran in the valleys of the Nashwaak River and the Southwest Miramichi River . Since at the same time the Chatham Branch Railway (from 1888 Chatham Railroad ) was opened, which represented the extension of the Northern & Western to Chatham , the node station was called Chatham Junction. In 1889 a bridge was opened over the St. John River and the route to Fredericton was extended.

In 1891, Northern & Western merged with Chatham Railroad to form Canada Eastern Railway (CE). Shortly thereafter, their route was extended beyond Chatham to Loggieville . In 1904 the Intercolonial Railway acquired the CE. The section from Blackville to Chatham Junction was closed in 1912 when a new parallel connection was opened via Quarryville . In 1985, operations between McGivney and Blackville and between Chatham and Loggieville ended, and in 1995 the Fredericton – McGivney line was closed. This means that only the short section from Nelson Junction (formerly Chatham Junction) to Chatham is still in operation of the CE line. It is now served by the New Brunswick East Coast Railway .
