As a result of the shutdown of a sawmill in 2007, the number of unemployed rose and the population fell slightly.

An important livelihood of the inhabitants today is tourism. The fishing season begins in spring. Huge schools of salmon ( Salmo salar ) then migrate in the Miramichi River in summer and autumn . Fishing with special licenses is offered in abundance. Blackville is a center of sport salmon fishing and likes to refer to itself as The Salmon Capital of the Miramichi (the salmon center of the Miramichi region).

In winter, snowmobile tours are organized in the area for visitors .
