Álvaro de Ibarra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Álvaro de Ibarra (* 1619 in Lima , today: Peru ; † 1677 (according to other sources: 1675) there) was a Spanish lawyer who temporarily served as viceroy of Peru . Ibarra was born in Lima, so was a Creole who was not born in mainland Spain.

Life

He studied law and at the age of 25 took a chair at the Universidad San Marcos . He remained connected to the university even after moving to the administrative service and advocated reforming the staffing of chairs. These should only be carried out by committees made up of several members in order to avoid favoritism. The process was convincing and was adopted by renowned universities in mainland Spain (Salamanca, Valladolid, Alcalá de Henares).

In 1655 Álvaro de Ibarra was appointed in charge of the protection of the natives ( Fiscal protector de indios ).

Viceroy Luis Enríquez de Guzmán sent him shortly afterwards to Chile , where the governor Antonio de Acuña Cabrera was deposed in an outrageous act for military incapacity by the angry people. Ibarra clarified the situation, appointed a new governor and took Acuña Cabrera and his popularly appointed successor Francisco de la Fuente y Villalobos to Lima to try them there. The process dragged on until 1658.

Ibarra then went to the Real Audiencia of Quito as Oidor and took over its chairmanship.

He later returned to the Real Audiencia of Lima . After the retirement of Bernardo de Iturriaza , Ibarra took over its chairmanship.

When the viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro died in 1672, Ibarra took over the office of viceroy on an interim basis in his function as dean of the Audiencia. His brief tenure was largely uneventful. He handed over the office to the new viceroy Baltasar de la Cueva Enríquez in 1674 and retired to the University of San Marcos.

Álvaro de Ibarra died in Lima in 1677 (according to other sources: 1675).
