history
The Canal du Rhône à Sète originally flowed into the Rhône at Beaucaire . However, this connection was cut off during canalization work on the Rhône. As a replacement for this, the Petit Rhône, which branches off from the main stream above Arles , was expanded for shipping over a length of 20 kilometers and connected to the Canal du Rhône à Sète at Saint-Gilles.
Economical meaning
The small canal has thus become an important part of a continuous shipping connection from the Rhône to Sète and on to the Canal du Midi .
