career

Canan Kaftancıoğlu completed a medical degree in Istanbul in 1995 . After graduation, she worked as a doctor in the emergency department of the state hospital in Sivas. She completed her specialist training in forensic medicine at the Istanbul University Faculty of Forensic Medicine from 1997. Her doctoral thesis is devoted to torture cases from the 1990s. She married Ali Naki Kaftancıoğlu, also a doctor, whose father, the writer Ümit Kaftancıoğlu , was shot in 1980. The couple have a daughter. Canan Kaftancıoğlu went into politics "because, as a doctor, I cannot change my country".

From 2011 to 2012 Kaftancıoğlu was one of the deputies of the provincial chairman of the CHP and responsible for press, culture and communication, 2012–2014 she was again deputy provincial chairman of the CHP. In 2014 she ran as mayor of Maltepe in the local elections . Canan Kaftancıoğlu took over the post of provincial party chairman in Istanbul from Cemal Canpolat on January 13, 2018 . "Turkey," she said in mid-2018, "is a surprise country". At that time nobody thought of a defeat for the AKP in Istanbul. Canan Kaftancıoğlu is considered the right-hand man of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu . She supported his nomination and she was involved in both election victories in March and June 2019.

Immediately after being elected provincial party leader in early 2018, she received threats and was constantly insulted on the Internet. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called her a terrorist in a parliamentary group meeting . He also accused her husband of eating pork. Since then, the politician has been considered the archenemy of the Turkish president. She commented on Erdoğan's statements as follows: "I was made a target". In May 2019, shortly after Imamoglu's first election victory and before Erdoğan's forced re-election, she was charged with terrorist propaganda, sedition , insulting the presidency , insulting officials and denigrating the state . The prosecutor called for up to 17 years in prison. Within their own party, the charges were seen as an "attempt to intimidate" following the AKP's defeat in Istanbul.

The case was heard before the 37th Grand Criminal Chamber in Istanbul. 35 social media postings from 2012 to 2017 were named as evidence . Even during the trial, shortly before the trial, she was reviled on the Internet: "You will pay. They will take you to where Selo is." Said Selahattin Demirtaş , a well-known Kurdish politician who has been in Edirne since November 2016 . Within the CHP, the trial against the party leader was now viewed as an "act of revenge" for the two-time victory in Istanbul

In September 2019, she was sentenced to almost 10 years in prison for earlier statements in her political activities. She should not be arrested for the duration of the appeal process. According to the CHP, an appeals court must rule on the case within six months.
