Canary Wharf is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is located in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 in the middle of the extensive Canary Wharf business district and is the busiest station in the entire DLR network.

The station is located directly next to the One Canada Square building , the second tallest skyscraper in Great Britain, and is integrated into a shopping center . The system comprises three tracks and three platforms so that boarding and alighting can be carried out separately if necessary ( Spanish solution ). An elliptical glass roof stretches over it.

West India Quay , the closest station in the north, is only 199 meters away - the shortest station distance on a rail network in all of London. A transfer option to the underground station of the same name on the Jubilee Line is noted on the route network map. However, this can only be reached with a long walk through the shopping center or across the street. In fact, the Heron Quays DLR station is a bit closer to the subway station.

history

The Canary Wharf station was part of the original DLR project. But when the basic network was opened in August 1987, the station in the shell was initially closed. It consisted of two short side platforms, similar to Heron Quays. But it soon became clear to those in charge that the rapid development of the Canary Wharf office district, which had not been foreseen on this scale, would generate a demand that by far exceeded the capacity of a simply built station. Almost a month before the start of operations, the construction consortium GEC - Mowlem received the order to replace the station with the extensive facility that is in place today. The opening finally took place in November 1991.
