One Canada Square [ ˈwʌn ˈkænədə ˌskweə ] is the second tallest building in London with a height of 236 meters and 50 floors . Until The Shard was completed, the skyscraper was the tallest habitable building in Britain . For comparison, the Emley Moor television tower , the tallest free-standing structure in Great Britain, near Huddersfield is 330 meters high.
The skyscraper, completed in 1991, was named after Canada because it was built by the Canadian company Olympia and York . Architects were César Pelli with Adamson Associates and Frederick Gibberd Coombes. Shortly after completion, the company went bankrupt. The name of the building is also the address, but the building is also known as the Canary Wharf Tower because it is part of the Canary Wharf office complex in Docklands .
There is no viewing platform and the upper floors of the building are generally not accessible to tourists, but there is a shopping center in the basement. The building is flanked by two other skyscrapers that were built ten years later and are both 200 meters high: HSBC Tower (8 Canada Square) and Citigroup Center (25 Canada Square).
reception
- In the novel Operation Elite by Matthew Reilly is the building site of a action scene in which the upper floors are almost completely destroyed.
- In the British television series Doctor Who , One Canada Square Tower is the headquarters of the " Torchwood Institute"; it was built around a dimensional rift and destroyed in a battle against the Daleks and Cybermen .
- The building is seen twice in the British comedy Johnny English . One houses a hospital and a second right next to it (as a twin tower) houses Pascal Sauvage's office.
- The tower also appeared several times on the television show The Apprentice.
- The popular BBC soap opera EastEnders.
