List of tallest structures in London
In London , buildings were generally not allowed to be taller than 100 feet (30.5 meters) until the early 1960s , with a few exceptions. This restriction was introduced so that the fire department could use a ladder to reach each floor of a building. The lifting of these structural restrictions led to the construction of numerous tall buildings during the 1960s; the best-known example from this time is the BT Tower with 189 meters.
The first skyscraper in London was the 183 meter high NatWest Tower (now called Tower 42 ), which was completed in 1979. In 1991 the 235 meter high One Canada Square building followed , the heart of the Canary Wharf urban development area . At the turn of the millennium, other striking skyscrapers followed, which have a lasting impact on the skyline , including the HSBC Tower , Citigroup Center and 30 St Mary Ax .
London is experiencing a construction boom in the area of skyscrapers: In July 2012, the 306-meter-high The Shard, the tallest building in Europe to date, was completed. In some parts of the city, the height of buildings is still limited, as the direct view of certain striking buildings such as E.g. St Paul's Cathedral from Richmond Park , Hampstead Heath and Waterloo Bridge must be possible without restrictions.
