Swiss Games Prize 2005 Strategy Games : 2nd place

Candamir (subtitle “The First Settlers”) is a board game for two to four people by Klaus Teuber . It was published in German in 2004 by Kosmos and in 2005 in English as Candamir: The First Settlers by Mayfair Games . In 2005 it took second place at the Swiss Games Prize in the strategy games category.

Candamir is based in the Catan world, but it is a new game idea. Particular attention is paid to the first settlement in Catan, in the vicinity of which the residents find various raw materials and natural products on hikes. With these goods required in the village can be produced, for the production of which the player is rewarded (among other things) with victory points .

Candamir combines board and role-playing games : every player has a character whose characteristics he improves in the course of the game. With a special editor, players can create their own characters and use a point system to give them different properties and abilities than the standard characters.

The game builds on the novel The Settlers of Catan by Rebecca Gablé . Individual characters and incidents from the novel appear on adventure cards, and the main characters grant players victory points for objects made or animals found.

Candamir was criticized for the low level of interaction between the players. This is why some people have more fun playing with two people than with three or four players, as the individual player does not have to wait so long for their own turn. In 2005 a new edition came out in which the target cards for three and four players bring in an additional resource to speed up the game a little. For owners of the old edition, you can also download the newer backs of the target cards.

Also in 2005, Elasund was released as a follow-up game , which is, however, an independent game.
