The candango mole mouse ( Juscelinomys candango ), also known as the Brasilia grave mouse , is an extinct rodent belonging to the mole genus . The species is only known from nine specimens collected in Brasilia in 1960.

features

The Candango mole reached a head-trunk length of 136 mm, a tail length of 57 mm, a hind foot length of 26 mm and an ear length of 15 mm. The skull was sturdy and the muzzle was long. The agutibranch fur on the back was short. The peritoneum was orange. The tail, which was rather thick, was well haired.

Habitat and way of life

Before urbanization , the habitat was a park-like landscape with scattered trees and grass vegetation. Little is known about the way of life. The species lived in buildings. The stomach contents of one specimen consisted of vegetarian material and ants.

status

The Candango mole mouse was discovered in 1960 by the Brazilian zoologist João Moojen in the Parco Zoobotanico in Brasilia. Nine copies were collected. Despite several intensive searches, the species was not rediscovered in the period that followed. The entire region in the type locality is sprawled and today belongs to the urban area of Brasília . In 2008, the IUCN declared the Candango molehole extinct.

Systematics

In 1887 the Danish zoologist Herluf Winge described the Pleistocene form Oxymycterus talpinus on the basis of fossil remains from Minas Gerais. In 1965 João Moojen established the genus Juscelinomys for this taxon . In 2005, Juscelinomys candango and Juscelinomys talpinus were synonymous with each other by Guy Musser and Michael D. Carleton in the standard work Mammal Species of the World .
