Candy box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Candy Box (ger .: candy box ) is a minimalist computer role-playing game developed and published in 2013 by aniwey.

Gameplay

The program is based on the principle of surprise and discovery. As the game progresses, more and more options are unlocked. The browser game was created with the help of JavaScript and uses ASCII-Art as the form of representation . The game mechanics are reminiscent of games in social networks .

Candy Box shares some features with certain games in these environments: For example, candy production (as a resource collection) continues without the player's intervention. Even if there is no official link to these communities, according to Leigh Alexander of Gamasutra, social networks were important to the success of the program. Due to minimal guidance and feedback on player actions, discussions with other people were responsible for a large part of the fun; for many people they were also necessary to get ahead in the game. In addition to the social component, Alexander mentions the “stress-free accessibility” to the game principle, the “charming minimalism” and the brevity as key points. Stress-free, because there is practically no time pressure, and brevity, as Candy Box does not give the impression that the player wants to occupy himself with himself for unnecessarily long.

development

The developer, a computer science student from Caen under the pseudonym aniwey , created Candy Box in his spare time as a programming exercise. By the end of April 2013, more than 20,000 people were playing Candy Box. Extensive discussions about the game arose in the forum of the website jeuxvideo.com. The game went viral in early May , and the number of users multiplied to 450,000 within a week. On September 4, 2013 there were around 1.2 million saved games.

Candy Box 2 was released on October 24, 2013 . In addition to numerous new role-playing elements, there is also a German voice output for the first time.

reception

The US American PC Magazine gives the game 4 out of 5 stars, rated it as “Unique and entertaining” and “Addictive”. The magazine sees advantages as the surprising depth ("Surprising depth") and the "Simplicity of form combined with increasingly complex mechanics".

Kotaku remarked that the combination of ASCII graphics, role-playing elements and resource management at Candy Box had caught on with hundreds of thousands ("Candy Box's curious combination of ASCII" graphics, "role-playing elements and resource management has caught on with hundreds of thousands" ).

According to Mashable, "charming ASCII art belies the profound computer game that can quickly lead to addiction" ("charming ASCII art style belies a very deep game that can quickly get addictive").

Carsten Görig from Spiegel Online assesses the computer game as follows: “The game manages with more than simple graphics and impresses with the magical belief that something exciting could still happen. [...] And in "Candy Box!" there is this [surprise] again and again. From a simple decision-making game - eat candy or throw it away - it becomes something much bigger. "
