The Grand Vision BV is a Dutch eyeglass retailers. The company was created on January 1st, 2011 through the merger of Pearle Europe BV and GrandVision SA, based at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. GrandVision belongs to the investment company HAL Holding NV, a subsidiary of the listed HAL Trust, which is majority owned by the Van der Vorm family. The name HAL refers to the shipping company Holland-America Line , which had been managed by Nico van der Vorm for many years until it was sold to Carnival Cruise Lines in the late 1980s.

GrandVision SA

In 1989 the first branch of the company later renamed Grand Optical Photoservice SA opened in France under the name Grad Optical. In the following years the company expanded both within France and abroad. In 1994 Grand Optical Photoservice SA was listed on the Paris Stock Exchange . With the takeover of the British Vision Express Ltd. in 1997, GrandVision SA, based in Paris, was created.

Pearle Europe BV

In 1961 the ophthalmologist Stanley Pearle founded Pearle Vision Inc. in Savannah, USA. With the takeover of the Brilmij Group in 1979, the company was also active in Europe. The Dutch branches have been operating under the name Pearle Opticiens since 1990 . In 1996 HAL Holding NV acquired the European business of the American Pearle Vision Inc., based in the Netherlands. After the takeover, Pearle Europe BV began an expansion course in other countries. This also included the takeover of the Austrian Revue Optik in 1997, which was later renamed Pearle Optik. In 1998 Apollo-Optik was taken over in Germany.

Merger to GrandVision BV

On July 6, 2010, GrandVision and Pearle Europe announced their merger to form GrandVision BV. The merger resulted in an optician chain with 6,110 branches in 44 countries and a turnover of 3.2 billion euros (2015). The merger was completed on January 1, 2011. HAL Holding NV remains the majority owner with 99 percent of the shares, which previously held the majority in both companies.

On January 12, 2015, GrandVision announced the IPO planned for February. The subscription period for the share began on January 26, 2015 and ended on February 5, 2015, with an average price of EUR 20 per share. GrandVision NV has been listed on Euronext in Amsterdam since February 6, 2015 . A total of 20 percent of shares was issued on that day.

In July 2019, the EssilorLuxottica Group announced that it was interested in taking over GrandVision. An agreement on this has already been reached with HAL Holding as the main shareholder of GrandVisions.

Trivia

The former parent company of Pearle Europe BV, Pearle Vision Inc., is now a subsidiary of the Luxottica Group .
