history

The name Apollo was registered as a trademark of Foto-Quelle in 1969. In 1972 Apollo was founded as a separate company with headquarters in Schwabach, ten years later the first entry in the commercial register of Apollo-Augenoptik GmbH took place . In 1985 the company was called Apollo-Optik GmbH . Since 1998 the company has belonged to the international optics group Pearle through the Dutch investment company HAL Investments . In 2011 the GrandVision Group emerged, one of the largest optics groups in the world.

The Berlin optician chain Ruhnke Optik , founded in 1869, was taken over by the Danish company Synoptik in early 2001 . This in turn was bought by Apollo and integrated into the existing branch network. In July 2007 the takeover of the Marktkauf subsidiary Krane Optik was completed. According to its own information, Apollo-Optik is the largest optician chain in Germany with around 860 branches. Apollo-Optik does not officially announce any sales figures.

At the end of July 2019, a takeover offer was announced by the EssilorLuxottica Group . EssilorLuxottica is a merger between the eyeglass lens manufacturer Essilor and the eyeglass frame group Luxottica .

production

Everything that exceeds the capacity of the individual branches is manufactured at the headquarters in Schwabach . The glasses supplied by the glass suppliers are cut in production. This work is done fully automatically or semi-automatically with the help of grinding machines, mainly CNC- controlled. Then the glasses and the frames, which are completely purchased, are sent to the branches and assembled there. Only in a few cases does the central workshop take over the complete production of the glasses.

Due to the increase in orders with almost the same staffing levels per branch, attempts are now being made to have as many glasses as possible manufactured in the headquarters and to automate as many processes as possible. With the contact lens delivery service "iwear-direct", the lens including care products is sent to the customer. The customer only comes to the branch for a follow-up inspection.

marketing

Since it was integrated into the Pearle Group, the company has been using sometimes drastic marketing with special campaigns that change about every 3 months. For example, the “age discount” campaign and the commercial that shows a flower that sees ugly glasses and has to vomit because of it, became known. More recently, spots have been used in a more conventional style.

The company cooperates with well-known manufacturers of spectacle lenses - initially with Zeiss , then with Rodenstock - as well as well- known manufacturers of frames . There are also collaborations with Payback, among others .

Employee

The company employs around 3,600 people and has been running an internal training program since February 2007 to train journeymen to become masters. There is cooperation with the master school in Diez and the curriculum is supplemented by leadership and branch management.

logistics

The goods are usually delivered within one day. Available own-brand frames are shipped from the central warehouse, many branded frames, contact lenses and care products directly from the manufacturer. Sold-out frames can, for example in the case of frame complaints, also be requested from another branch and relocated after it has been checked which branch still has the desired version in stock.

franchise

In addition to group-run branch operations, the company also offers a franchise concept that includes the corporate identity , the entire Apollo product range (exclusive brands) and special purchasing conditions. Every franchise business is obliged to adhere to contractually stipulated branch standards, but still has a certain amount of room for maneuver in all areas of business management.
