The Cane da Pastore di Oropa or "Cane da Pastore Biellese", in German a "Bielleser Schäferhund", is a dog breed that has not yet been recognized by the "Fédération cynologique internationale".
description
The Cane Pastore di Oropa has been recognized at the national level by the "Ente Nazionale Cinofilia Italiana" since 2018. It is used in northern Piedmont and the Aosta Valley as a working dog by these eponymous shepherds at altitudes from 1200 to 2500 meters as herding dogs . In the Alps and foothills of the valleys between the Aosta and Sesia valleys, they look after the Bielleser and Bergamasque sheep or the typical Aosta cattle and the "Pezzata Rossa d'Oropa", typical alpine cattle species of the Bielleser foothills. Her energy and strong physique and the resulting physical reserves predestine her for the sometimes hard herding work at these heights. Their dense undercoat also helps them withstand very low temperatures and periods of rain without any problems. They are almost only to be found in the regions of Italy mentioned above, but especially males, which are a little more impatient and stubborn compared to the females, and are therefore less suitable for herding work, have also made it abroad or in other regions of Italy. Wherever they appear, they are often confused with the smaller Australian Shepherd. As a rule, the animals have a shoulder height of 45-60 cm and weigh between 18 and 35 kg, with the males being stronger than the females. The dogs are mostly multicolored, either on a gray or white base coat. Due to the changes in sheep and cattle husbandry, the Bielles sheepdog has also been threatened with extinction for years and various initiatives such as the "Amici del Cane d'Oropa" try to support their preservation through their public relations work.
