The camera was the first EOS for the professional photographer market and was designed as an autofocus successor to the Canon F-1N . Canon took a big risk by switching from the classic FD bayonet to the electronic EF bayonet because the company forced its customers to buy new lens equipment.

The EOS-1 offered autofocus, an extremely robust housing, a pentaprism viewfinder that showed 100% of the field of view, shutter speeds between 1/8000 and 30 seconds, 1/250 s flash sync time and 14 custom functions.
