The Canon EOS-1V is a further development of the EOS-1N / EOS-1N RS and, according to Canon terminology (like all other models in the 1 series), is one of the professional models. The model came on the market in 2000 and was also offered after the end of production from 2008 to 2018 (only in Japan). As the last analog top model in the EOS family, the EOS-1V also served as the basis for the digital EOS-1D / Ds / D X professional models. Even today, the EOS-1V (in the HS version with Power Booster handle) with a frame rate of up to 10 frames / second is one of the world's fastest SLRs with a movable mirror.

particularities

In contrast to the EOS 3, which was offered around the same time (1998–2008) and which is technically very similar to the EOS-1V, the EOS-1V weighs 185g more despite its similar dimensions. The reason for this is the more robust housing construction. The inner housing of the EOS-1V consists of a die-cast aluminum, other parts of glass fiber reinforced polycarbonate. In contrast to the "smaller sister" EOS 3 and the previous model EOS-1N, the front and upper outer housing is made of a special magnesium alloy instead of plastic. This makes the case harder and leads to a higher torsional stiffness. The magnesium alloy also acts as a shield for the electronics against electromagnetic radiation.

In contrast to its predecessor (EOS-1N), the EOS-1V is much more extensively protected against rain and splash water. For this purpose, the battery compartment, the rear panel, the connection sockets and all operating elements are sealed with silicone. For this purpose, silicone seals were installed in a total of 72 places in the housing.

The electronically controlled rotating magnet lock of the EOS-1V consists of two carbon fiber slats and three ultra-duraluminium slats and is designed for more than 150,000 releases. Canon-internal attempts were aborted after 200,000 exposures without significant damage. Since the shutter does not require any voltage to keep the second shutter curtain open for longer exposures, it is particularly energy-efficient. This means that up to 1,000 operating hours are possible with the 2CR5 battery at room temperature.

Like the EOS 3, the EOS-1V is equipped with a newly developed CMOS sensor (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) with 45 autofocus sensors; however, the AF and its algorithms have been improved. Seven of the 45 AF areas work as cross sensors, the central sensor is designed as a double cross sensor. The effective light-sensitive area of the individual pixels has been enlarged by 12 percent compared to the EOS-1N and coated with an anti-reflective layer to enable the autofocus sensors to react faster and more precisely even in critical lighting conditions. Matching the robust housing of the EOS-1V, the CMOS sensor is also housed in a mechanically and optically completely newly developed AF unit. The new construction is shock-absorbing and insensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. In contrast to the EOS 3, in which a second fully reflective mirror deflects the AF beam path by 90 °, this second mirror was dispensed with in the EOS-1V, which means that the AF beam path is now linear and unwanted reflections can be avoided in the event of unfavorable incidence of light.

equipment

Camera drives

  • Power Drive Booster : The PB-E2 was specially developed for the EOS-1V, with which frame rates of up to 10 frames / second are possible. Alternatively, the PB-E1 can also be connected, but it only increases the serial image speed to 6 images per second.

Focusing screens

Standard: laser-frosted disc with AF ellipse, AF measuring fields and spot measuring circle; optional nine interchangeable accessory discs. The focusing screens are changed by the lens bayonet.

Flash units

In the Canon EOS system there are several Speedlite flash units with different characteristics. Even today's devices are backwards compatible with the E-TTL protocol of the EOS-1V - the EOS-1V is not, however, E-TTL-2 compatible.

Remote release accessories

There are a number of accessories available for remote control of the EOS-1V, such as: B. Remote release cable, etc.

Models / versions

The EOS-1V was also sold in a set with the Power Drive Booster PB-E2. In this configuration, the name of the camera is "EOS-1V HS"
