The Cap Manuel refers to the southern tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula in Senegal , which forms the extreme west of the continent of Africa and which forms a nine-kilometer-wide wedge-shaped protrusion to the south. To the east of Cap Manuel, the Baie de Gorée and the Rade de Dakar are protected from the wind and waves of the Atlantic . This made the island of Gorée a preferred anchorage for seafarers from many nations coming from Europe and ultimately led to the construction of the port city of Dakar , whose inner city district Dakar Plateau extends around three and a half kilometers to the north from Cap Manuel.

The rocky cliffs of Cap Manuel were fortified with gun emplacements for the military protection of the port entrance of Dakar. On the northern edge of the coastal road that circles the Cap Manuel peninsula as Avenue Pasteur or Route de la Corniche Est , there is a small lighthouse that served to ensure the safety of the port access. The coordinates associated with the item point to this point.

In 1445 the Portuguese navigator Dinis Dias reached the Cap-Vert peninsula and the island of Gorée and was the first European navigator to circumnavigate Cap Manuel. It is likely to have received this name later, however, because it was not until 1495 that King Manuel I gave this name the necessary historical meaning for Portuguese seafarers.
