Cape Fria
The Cape Fria ( German Cold Cape ) is a headland in the South Atlantic and is located just south of Angra Fria ( German Cold Bay ) on the west coast of Africa within the national park Skeleton Coast in Namibia . The border with Angola is about 200 kilometers north. The Cold Cape is only accessible via fly-in safaris as it is subject to a tourism concession.
history
Like the Cape of Cross, the Cold Cape was discovered in 1486 by the Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão , who gave the cape its characteristic name because of the cold Benguela Current flowing here .
Since the early 1980s there have been repeated plans to build a deep-sea port with a railway connection near the cape in order to connect northern Namibia - but also the neighboring countries of Botswana , Zambia , Zimbabwe and Angola - to international sea traffic more quickly. Such a project would also benefit Namibia's position in intra-African trade, but it has not been pursued further, mainly because of financing and environmental issues. The construction of a port and a rail connection has been planned again since 2011 and was confirmed in October 2014.
