Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

The Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is a smaller National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern South Carolina near Awendaw, South Carolina . The protected area includes land and water, streams, bays, salt mash and offshore islands. Most of the area is only accessible by boat. Facilities include a visitor center located on US Highway 17 , approximately a half-hour drive from Charleston, South Carolina . During the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, the umbra will leave continental America here.

Lighthouse Island

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge has two historic lighthouses, both on Lighthouse Island. The two Cape Romain Lighthouses are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sewee Visitor & Environmental Education Center

The Sewee Center features exhibits from a variety of local ecosystems as well as from the historical heritage of South Carolina's Lowcountry . Facilities include a training room, lecture hall, bookstore and picnic areas. The center is jointly run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Forest Service and offers natural history training and activities.
