Capela da Nossa Senhora da Glória

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Capela da Nossa Senhora da Glória ( Chapel of the Glorious Mother of God ), a small church building, is located in the municipality of Campanário in the Ribeira Brava district on the island of Madeira .

It was built by the fortress builder Jerónimo Jorge (around 1570-1617) before the end of the 16th century. The chapel was built by the nobleman Henrique Bettencourt Vasconcelos at the beginning of the 17th century. The chapel, which stands alone on a cliff, follows a Mannerist model designed by Jerónimo Jorge and later by his son Bartolomeu João Jorge in a simple style adapted to the location. The altarpiece probably dates from around 1620.

In 1823 it was administered under the Majorate of Luís Correia. Around 1920 it was restored by the owner of the area, the third Countess of Torre Bela, Viscondessa Filomena Gabriela Correia Brandão Henriques de Noronha (1839–1925).

The feast of the patron saints takes place every year and is usually celebrated on the last weekend in August.
