Campanário is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Ribeira Brava , on the island of Madeira . It has 4,582 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

During the settlement of the island from the early 15th century, Campanário also emerged. The place was officially mentioned for the first time in 1556. It became an independent municipality in the 16th century.

After it belonged to the district of Funchal until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the municipality was incorporated into the newly created district of Câmara de Lobos in 1835 . Since 1914 Campanário has belonged to the newly created Ribeira Brava district.
