The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição ( Chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception ) is located in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos in Madeira , Portugal in the bay of Câmara de Lobos. It is a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception .

history

The chapel is said to have been built in the 15th century by João Gonçalves Zarco , who is credited with rediscovering Madeira, and is believed to have been the first chapel built on the island. While it is recognized that the foundations of the chapel were built by fishermen, there is some confusion about the original use of the chapel. It is said to have been privately owned and served as the grave of its owners and was only consecrated for the Virgin Mary in the 17th century.

The ceiling painting was created in 1791 by the Madeiran painter Nicolau Ferreira .

The "Fischerkapelle" has been registered as a locally significant cultural building since 1993.
