Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (Canhas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (German Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels ) is located in the community ( Freguesia ) Canhas in the district ( concelho ) of Ponta do Sol , on the Portuguese island of Madeira . It is a Mannerist style chapel ; it was built in the 15th century and restored in the 19th century. It has been a listed building since 1977 (level IM - municipal interest).

Settlers from mainland Galicia had settled in the area of Ponta do Sol, and the area was known for some miracles, so that the desire for a chapel of its own arose. Presumably a first chapel was built and destroyed as early as the 15th century, it was not rebuilt until 1508 by Martim Afonso and his wife Isabel, to whom the chapel and the surrounding land had gone. It has a rectangular floor plan and a gable facade, and a veranda was added later.

Renovation work

The chapel was restored in 1892 on behalf of the opera singer and pianist Jélia de Atouguia de Franca Neto (1826–1903). In 1955, Francisco Rocha de Gouveia, a new owner, made some changes.

Recent restoration work (altar, altarpiece and repainting of the images of Our Lady of the Angels and Our Lady of Desterro) were carried out in 2001 with the support of the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs.
