The Capella dels Socors (German: Help or Beistandskapelle ) in Tossa de Mar is a chapel and is a listed building .

history

The chapel was donated by the sea merchant Antoni Caixa in 1593. It was originally located well in front of the city walls on what was then the road to Lloret de Mar in the town's orchards. Presumably, the cause of the chapel building was a vow made by the founder to save him from distress at sea. A plaque on the chapel commemorates the founder, showing a ship in heavy seas and the chapel in the gardens in the background.

Around the years 1718–1720 the chapel was expanded. There was an expansion both in length and in height. In 1870 Miquel Martí i Vidal bought the chapel to make it available to the parish. In the following years, further extensions and renovations were made. So the front door comes from that time; the structure with the bell was built in 1889. In 1936, the chapel's furnishings were largely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. In particular, the loss of the baroque altarpiece from 1726, which was ascribed to Pau Costa , weighed heavily.

In 1943 and 1944 the chapel was restored. In 1967 a renovation took place during which the chapel got its present appearance.

description

The chapel is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone of Tossa de Mar at the head of Carrer dels Socors, the street that leads directly to the main entrance of the old town. It divides the flow of traffic into Carrer de la Guàrdia and Carrer del Pou de la Vila. At the rear of the chapel is the central square, Plaça Espanya.

A one-story barrel vault is built on a rectangular floor plan. The front of the chapel is plastered in white. The side walls are left in natural stone. There are two bell riders on the roof, one above the front and one on the side.

Traditions

Every year on July 2, the festa de la Mare de Déu dels Socors (German: Festival of the Helping Virgin) is celebrated. On June 29th, during the festa de St. Pere , a sardana will be held on Carrer dels Socors. The chapel is the start and finish of a local pilgrimage to Santa Coloma de Farners , which takes place on January 20th and 21st.
