Pau Costa (* 1672 in Vic , Catalonia ( Spain ); † 1727 in Cadaqués ?) Was a Catalan sculptor .

Life and works

Pau Costa received his training in the workshop of the sculptor Pau Sunyer . At the age of sixteen (1688) he had already made the altarpiece of Sant Libori in Vic. His works always had religious themes, they were shaped by the contrast between Baroque and Catalan Gothic .

From 1682 to 1686 he worked on the altar by Francesc Santacruz and other works. In 1690 the altar of St. Anthony for the parish church in Torelló followed . In 1713 he created the altarpiece of Christ for Berga , the llitera de l'Assumpta .

In 1698 a sculpture followed in Saint Benet de la Seu, at the same time as the work on another altarpiece for the monastery of La Portella. The following year he was commissioned to create the Christ for the Selva community .

In 1705 the elaborate altarpiece of Sant Feliu by Torelló followed (completed in 1710). In 1708 he created the sculpture Roser Olot (currently in the town of Saint Stephen), and from 1706 to 1712 the altarpiece of Arenys de Mar .

In 1723 he worked with Joan Torres from Figueres and erected the important altarpiece in the Gothic church of Santa Maria of Cadaqués , a work on which the collaboration of wood and stone by the architect Josep Serrano of Girona can also be seen. This style is typical of the baroque exuberance of his work.

There are still works by Pau Costa all over Catalonia. However, numerous works were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. A special altar from 1707 is in the church of Sant Martí in Cassa de la Selva . However, only four altar wings could be saved from this work.

Another important work is undoubtedly the altarpiece of the parish church of St. Maria in Arenys de Mar from 1706 to 1710.
