Captain Cork

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Captain Cork is a German-language web platform on the topics of wine, cuisine and tourism based in Potsdam . It was founded in 2009 by Marcus Johst and Manfred Klimek as a blog . Manfred Klimek was editor-in-chief of the blog from 2009 to 2014. After his departure, the site was completely revised and converted and expanded into an information platform. Marcus Johst has been the sole managing director since 2009.

In 2013 a wine book was published together with the Gräfe und Unzer publishing house. The main authors of the book are Manfred Klimek and Rainer Balcerowiak.

Alignment and Concept

Captain Cork is aimed at wine and culinary lovers who are younger than the readers of traditional wine magazines. The texts are entertaining and break with the usual writing style on wine topics. The editorial team has put forward five theses:

  1. What tastes good is good.
  2. Many wine drinkers no longer dare to say what they like because the ubiquitous testers have intimidated everyone with their points, glasses and descriptions.
  3. Conventional wine descriptions are illegible because they were written in a secret language that no normal wine drinker understands.
  4. The wine drinker does not dare to contradict, believing that he does not understand anything about wine. It’s very easy. You have to drink wine consciously, ask questions and trust your own sense of taste.
  5. It is worth taking an interest in wine, because good wine makes you happy. And you can need that more and more often.

The Tagesspiegel writes: “The team from“ Captain Cork ”discusses wines in an amusing and disrespectful manner. Typical wine Chinese? There is not any. The readers like it. ”In particular, it is often emphasized that the wine texts address not only experienced wine drinkers but also beginners.

Opinions on the wines of prominent winemakers in particular often meet divided opinions in the world of wine. This concerns, for example, a predominantly positive review of Til Schweiger's wine . Another example that caused a stir is the evaluation of the wine of the then Berlin airport boss Hartmut Mehdorn , which the editors tasted together with the chairman of the investigative committee of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Martin Delius (parliamentary group of the Pirate Party in the Berlin House of Representatives ).

Since there are no ivw-verified figures for digital products on the subject of wine in Germany, there are no official coverage figures. According to statistics with the Alexa Internet analysis tool , Captain Cork is one of the most visited sites on the subject of wine in Germany.

International wine competition

Since 2019, Captain Cork has been authorized to host a state-recognized wine competition as one of 26 German organizers. This was published in an announcement by the responsible Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism on November 14, 2019.
