The Captain James Cook Memorial is a memorial in the Australian capital of Canberra created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the east coast of Australia by Captain James Cook and inaugurated on April 25, 1970 by Queen Elizabeth II . It was commissioned by the Australian federal government and consists of two parts, a water fountain in the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin and a sculpture on its north bank in Commonwealth Park .

The water fountain is modeled on the Jet d'eau in Geneva , which was made possible through negotiations in the highest diplomatic circles. Your two pumps are driven by two electric motors with an output of 560 kW each. At maximum power, 500 liters of water per second shoot up at a speed of 260 km / h up to a height of 152 m. If only one pump is in operation, the water reaches a height of 114 m. On special occasions, the water fountain is illuminated at night. The water fountain is usually in operation from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In strong winds, the fountain is out of order because the falling water could otherwise obstruct the traffic on the nearby Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. The fountain is also switched off when the water level is low.

The water fountain was designed by the architects Bunning and Madden , as was the corresponding globe sculpture. It stands on the north shore of the lake, has a diameter of about three meters and shows the routes of all three circumnavigations of James Cook. The latitudes and longitudes form a kind of open cage, bas-reliefs made of copper represent the land masses.
