Cardiff Naturalists' Society

The Cardiff Naturalists' Society is a traditional Welsh natural history society based in Cardiff . It was founded in 1867 on the initiative of Robert Drane. In 2002 the company achieved the status of a non-profit organization. It is locally oriented and deals with the practical study of flora and fauna, environmental issues and geological aspects. It also participates in biological species registration. There are close links with regional academic institutions. Their logo is the Cardiff Castle .

For its members, the society offers regular lectures at Cardiff Metropolitan University as well as excursions to areas around Cardiff.

The Society established the original Cardiff Museum and later the Museum of Wales in Cardiff . The Museum of Wales still houses the Society's library of around 10,000 volumes.

From 1867 to 1986 the Society published the annual Reports and transactions of the Cardiff Naturalists Society . Topics were scientific articles on geology, archeology and natural history and book reviews. The editions were digitized in the context of the National Library of Wales' Welsh Journals Online project .

Since 2011, the society has presented the Biosciences Award annually to a second year student at Cardiff University . It is £ 250.00 and is awarded for the best contribution to the fieldwork project.
