Häme and his quintet, founded in 1947, were primarily responsible for the introduction of bop in Finland. He made several recordings with him ( I Surrender Dear 1948, Savel, Lemon Drop , 1950, Decca Records ). In addition to modern jazz , he also played popular, swing-oriented music and accompanied the singer Brita Koivunen on several of her hits in the 1950s. From 1959 to 1962 he was mainly a record producer (and was no longer active as a musician after 1960) and from 1962 he was a producer and program manager for Finnish television (TV2).

Häme graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 1953 and was secretary of the Association of Finnish Musicians from 1952 to 1957. He was also a critic for Rytmi magazine.

He wrote the first book on the history of jazz that appeared in Finland ( Rytmin voittokulku , Triumph of Rhythm, Helsinki 1949).

He is the grandson of the organist Lauri Hämäläinen (1832–1888) and the father of the harpsichordist Kati Hämäläinen (* 1947).
