The Cardiophorinae are a worldwide subfamily of the click beetles (Elateridae). It includes around 1000 species in 35 genera . The taxonomic position of the subtaxa that are currently assigned to this subfamily is unclear. A phylogenetic investigation of 27 genera of the subfamily suggests that regrouping within these sub-taxa is necessary.
features
The autapomorphies of the subfamily in the imagines are the laterally closed indentations of the middle hips ( coxes ), the short, truncated prosternal process , a heart-shaped shield ( scutellum ) and the missing or incompletely formed lateral grooves on the pronotum .
Way of life
The lifestyle of their larvae is characteristic of this subfamily of click beetles. They live predatory in the ground or in rotted wood.
Taxonomy and systematics
Lawrence & Newton (1995) erroneously assigned the genera Cardiorhinus and Hypodesis to the subfamily . Calder (1996) put the genus Patriciella from the Physodactylini to the Cardiophorinae.
